6 Reasons to Visit Estes Park in the Fall

Estes Park in Fall

While visiting Estes Park is enjoyable year-round, a trip to Estes Park in the fall is particularly special. Discover below how to make the most out of your visit to Estes Park during the fall.

Fall colors in Rocky Mountain National Park

An explosion of color makes its way to Colorado every fall, and one of the best shows is right here in Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park. Visitors can spot bright yellows and oranges throughout the town and within the park. And one of the best ways to experience fall colors is with a drive along the Peak-to-Peak Highway.

Wildlife viewing

While no matter what time of year in Estes Park you are bound to spot some wildlife, visiting Estes Park in the fall is the best time to see the local fauna. Chances are high that you will encounter deer, elk, and even moose. Fall is the rutting season (mating season) for elk so they are a bit more boisterous than normal with their loud bugling sound and more active, which makes wildlife viewing more fun!

While you are almost guaranteed to see elk in Rocky Mountain National Park, a visit in town will almost always present an opportunity to see elk as well, mostly in the grassy areas like Bond Park.

Elk Fest and other events

Estes Park is host to many events throughout the year but fall brings about some of the best with seasonal celebrations including Elk Fest and the Autumn Gold Festival. Probably the most popular event, Elk Fest, is a favorite that keeps visitors coming back year after year. The festival is in celebration of the elk rutting season and fall time in Estes Park. The festival is held at the end of September, early October.

Witness the collision of seasons

Can’t you just picture it? Elk bugling with golden aspens dancing in the winds with snowflakes making their first dance of the season. When the first snow settles into the high-country covering mountain peaks, it’s a true feast for the eyes. It is truly a magical time to visit Estes Park in the fall.

Great weather

Visit Estes Park in the fall and enjoy some of the best weather we have. With temperatures in the 50s and 60s during the day and almost freezing temps at night, fall in Estes Park is a great time for crisp morning walks, lazy warm afternoons, and cozy nights.  Fall is a great time for hiking, biking, fly fishing, and plenty of other outdoor activities.
