If there is one thing for sure, Coloradans love the outdoors and even more so, exploring it and protecting it. With four National Parks like Rocky Mountain National Park and over 40 state parks, our state is also home to an abundance of what we call open spaces that are open to the public. So, get out and explore these open spaces near Estes Park.
What are Colorado open spaces?
In Colorado, open space is a coveted piece of land designated and protected for hikers and mountain bikers. Don’t think of these spaces as a park, as you won’t find jungle gyms or picnic tables or other major modern developments, but rather a wild-like open space that is protected by the city and state. Often less crowded than the National Parks, our open spaces can provide great access to the beautiful Colorado landscape with designated trails and fewer people. They can be a great alternative if you are looking for something more low-key and less crowded but just as beautiful.
Luckily there are several open spaces near Estes Park that make for a great day trip or afternoon jaunt.
Hermit Park Open Space
Located just a few miles southeast of Estes Park, the Hermit Park Open Space spans 1,362 acres, all nestled amongst the hills between 7,880 and roughly 9,000 feet of elevation. Visitors will find towering ponderosa pine forests and wetland meadows, plus an abundance of mountain wildlife, including elk and deer. In addition to the beautiful landscape, you will also find hiking, biking, and even horseback riding trails. Plus, camping sites, cabins, and a reservable group pavilion.
While there are multiple trails within the area, Krueger Rock Trail is by far the most popular. The 3.7-mile round-trip hike is popular for its relatively short distance and its beautiful view from the top of Krueger Rock. Hikers will climb through an aspen and pine forest to reach views of Estes Park and the mountain peaks of RMNP. While the hike is rated as moderate, expect a steep scramble as you reach the top with an overall elevation gain of 1,137 feet.
Do note: Hermit Park’s Kruger Rock trail will be accessible from the trailhead to the “overlook” (0.6 miles) only, with the remaining 1.1 miles temporarily closed due to damage from the Kruger Rock Fire.
Knoll-Willows Open Space
The Knoll-Willows Open Space is located in downtown Estes Park and covers 20 acres with a conservation easement permanently protecting the open space. The small area houses a short half-mile trail that starts out in town and ascends to the top of the Knoll. As you follow along the creek to the summit, you will see views of the Stanley Hotel and Estes Park. The trail is a loop, well, rather a lollipop loop, and can be completed from either direction.
In addition to the views, this short hike is also popular due to the two historic structures of Albert Birch, the former city editor for the Denver Post. The ruins include a small, stone home on the Knoll that was burned and a rustic log cabin structure nearby. Local wildlife, such as elk and bears, also frequent the area, so be sure to bring your camera!
