As the sun goes down, the stars come out for quite the show in Estes Park. We think this is when the real show begins with a beautiful sky packed full of bright twinkling stars that aren’t often seen in big cities. With higher elevation and a somewhat remote landscape, there are several places to see the stars in Estes Park.
When to go see the stars
For optimal viewing, plan for a visit during the new moon. It is best to have as little light as possible to make sure you see every star. You also want to make sure it is a clear night when stargazing. You don’t want any clouds impeding your view.
Where to see the stars in Estes Park
Rocky Mountain National Park
Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the best places to see the stars in Estes Park. While Rocky Mountain National Park isn’t a designated International Dark Sky Park, there are several places inside the park perfect for stargazing. Start with Trail Ridge Road or Bear Lake.
Estes Park Memorial Observatory
Standing across from Lake Estes is the Estes Park Memorial Observatory, the center of the town’s astronomical world. The observatory features a state-of-the-art Paramount ME II robotic mount that supports a new 16-inch Ritchey-Chretien telescope – perfect for stargazing.
The EPMO hosts regular (and free) open house nights throughout the year, which offer a family-friendly intro to the science and wonder of stargazing. You can also schedule a private viewing session – also free, but donations are recommended.
What to bring for stargazing
It is essential to bring the right gear to ensure an exceptional experience when viewing the stars in Estes Park.
- Warm clothes to ensure you stay warm. Temperatures at higher elevation, especially at night, can be chilly, even in the summer. It is best to bring layers so you are always prepared.
- Headlamp or flashlight for helping to scope out the area. But remember to turn them off when photographing or stargazing so that don’t impede the views.
- Camera and tripod if you want to photography the night’s sky.
