Everything to Know About Memorial Day in Estes Park

Three generations of family hiking near Estes Park, Colorado, in summer; building and mountains in background

Memorial Day weekend is one of those times when Estes Park really starts to feel like summer is around the corner. The weather is warming up, the town gets a little more lively, and there is a nice mix of outdoor time, local events, and quieter moments if that is more your speed. It is also a meaningful weekend, so a lot of people like to balance the fun stuff with time to slow down and appreciate why the holiday matters.

Spend Some Time at the Estes Park Museum

If you want to get a better feel for the town beyond the usual scenic stops, the Estes Park Museum is worth a visit. It is a smaller museum, but that is part of the appeal. You can take your time and get a good sense of how Estes Park grew from its early history into the mountain town people know today. It is a nice way to break up the weekend, especially if the weather shifts or you want something low-key for part of the day.

Get Outside in Rocky Mountain National Park

A Memorial Day weekend trip to Estes Park usually includes at least some time in Rocky Mountain National Park, and for good reason. The park has more than 300 miles of hiking trails along with scenic drives, alpine lakes, and plenty of chances to spot wildlife.

That said, locals will tell you the same thing every year: go early. Memorial Day weekend is one of the first big travel weekends of the season, and timed entry reservations begin in late May. In 2026, those reservations start on Friday, May 22, so planning ahead makes a big difference.

Wander Through the Estes Park Art Market

If you are in town over Memorial Day weekend, the Estes Park Art Market is one of the better things to add to the plan. It takes place in Bond Park and features artists from Colorado and nearby states, with fine art and handmade goods that feel a lot more interesting than a typical souvenir stop. For 2026, the event is listed for May 23 to 25.

It is an easy stop if you are already downtown, and it gives the whole weekend a nice local feel.

Slow Things Down at Lake Estes

If you want a more relaxed way to spend part of the weekend, Lake Estes is always a good option. The marina offers rentals and access for boating, fishing, and lakeside time, and it is one of those places that works whether you want to be active or just take in the views for a while.
