During the summer, many travelers venture to Colorado for an adventurous and unforgettable getaway. Rocky Mountain National Park and Lake Estes are always must-do stops when visiting Estes Park, but there’s more nature that can be seen! Resting right in front of the Rocky Mountain peaks, Mary’s Lake in Estes Park is a free spot filled with terrific activities like fishing, picnicking, and wildlife viewing, all perfect for an ideal day in Colorado!
Fishing
Mary’s Park is a fisherman’s paradise! The 42 acres of water within the reservoir are filled with rainbow trout, brown & lake trout, and Kokanee salmon. Baitcasting is permitted, along with fly fishing and spinning. With a vast shoreline, get ready to spend the day reeling in some great trophies. Midday is the peak fishing time! Also, do not forget to grab your Colorado Fishing License before you go.
Picnicking
With the cool summer temperatures in Estes Park, it is a perfect time for a picnic at Mary’s Lake. Unlike the more popular lake areas around Estes Park, Mary’s Lake has a calmer and serene atmosphere. The lake rests right within a picturesque valley and the view of the Twin Sister Peaks complements a tasty lunch! Make sure your food is safely secured during your trip, or else you may find a bear trying to steal your snacks.
Wildlife Viewing
Not only does Mary’s Lake have beautiful views of the surrounding nature, but there are also has unique views of the Colorado wildlife. Much like the rest of Estes Park, roaming elk surround the area. It’s very likely you will catch a glimpse of them grazing on grass. Herds of deer frequent the area as well. Mary’s Lake is also a great spot for birdwatching. Grab your binoculars and admire the beauty of Colorado’s feathered friends!
Taking in the Sights
If you’re looking for a quick, peaceful hike with beautiful mountain views, the Mary’s Lake trail is a must. Starting from the main parking lot off Mary’s Lake Road, you’ll find two trail entrances—one takes you down a short fisherman’s path that ends right at the water’s edge. It’s optional, but worth a peek if you enjoy the serenity of the lake up close. From there, a short climb up the hill passes a weathered old concrete footing—like a forgotten relic near the park’s “summit.” Once you connect with the main trail, it gently winds along the lake’s northern shore, treating you to views of Twin Sisters and Lily Mountain, plus the impressive hydroelectric spout feeding into the lake. The walk back is an easy uphill stroll, rounding out a refreshing 0.6-mile out-and-back hike. Simple, scenic, and totally worth it.
