How To Have the Most Scenic Denver to Rocky Mountain National Park Drive

Trip to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. Picturesque motorway in rural USA

If you’re heading from Denver to Rocky Mountain National Park in the fall, don’t just take the fastest route—take the scenic one. The Peak to Peak Scenic Byway is Colorado’s oldest scenic byway, and in autumn, it transforms into a golden ribbon winding through forests, cliffs, and charming mountain towns. This isn’t just a road trip—it’s a front-row seat to Colorado’s most colorful season.

Start Your Engines in Denver

Leave the traffic behind and head northwest toward Boulder. Once you pass through the funky mountain town of Nederland, that’s when the magic really starts. The Peak to Peak Scenic Byway (Highway 72/119/7) begins here, and the next hour or so is filled with one breathtaking view after another.

Nederland: A Quirky First Stop

Nestled at 8,200 feet, Nederland is the perfect kickoff. Grab coffee from a local café, wander around the lakeside park, or stop by the Carousel of Happiness. The surrounding mountains will already be glowing gold with aspen leaves, so get your camera ready.

Golden Groves and Roadside Views

As you head north on the byway, you’ll be surrounded by dense groves of quaking aspens, their bright yellow leaves fluttering like confetti. The contrast of golden trees against dark pines and rocky peaks is classic Colorado fall. Expect lots of scenic pull-offs—take them! Whether it’s a wide valley overlook or a hidden creek, the views are worth the stop.

Allenspark: Quiet Beauty in the Trees

Tiny but charming, Allenspark is a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it town—but it’s surrounded by some of the best fall foliage you’ll see on the drive. If you want to stretch your legs, nearby Wild Basin Trailhead offers short hikes to waterfalls and alpine views.

St. Malo Chapel on the Rock

Just before you reach Estes Park, keep your eyes peeled for the iconic Chapel on the Rock. This stone chapel perched on a massive rock formation is framed by Mount Meeker in the background—add fall colors and it’s one of the most photographable spots in the state.

Roll Into Estes Park, Refreshed

After all that beauty, you’ll arrive in Estes Park feeling like you’ve already been on an adventure—and the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park is just minutes away.

Take the long way. Savor the views. Make it more than just a drive—it’s an unforgettable journey through fall in the Rockies.
